Snow Washington Style

Sachiko and I went snowboarding at Steven's Pass (about 1:45 outside of Seattle) on Sunday. All the rain we get in the city ends up as snow in the mountains. They had just gotten over a foot the night before...

Dr. Dean Punk Rock Song

The guys at Team Null put together this awesome MP3 that takes Howard Dean's famous speech in Iowa and makes it into a punk rock song.

Get the free MP3 here.

Like it says on the site... with that music, he sounds like Mike Muir from Suicidal Tendencies. Maybe all he wanted was a Pepsi.

Float like a Butterfly, Sting Like... uh ... Try Not to Puke

So our fiancées and wives got together for Christmas and got three (Me, Blake and Anthony) of us gift certificates for 6 boxing lessons. Last night was our first lesson at Cappy's Gym in Seattle's Central District.

Being that we're all incredibly finely-tuned athletes, we knew we'd go in and kick ass. That was until the actual exercise started. I think Blake is in better shape than Anthony and I, who were ready to go outside and puke after the first 30 minute warm-up time. We kept it down, caught our breath and proceeded with the pugilism.

For the last hour, the actual boxing got cranked up. We didn't expect it, but on the first night we were full-on punching each other. We wore the head gear, mouthpieces, gloves, hand wraps and all. It was a group lesson, so we ended up sparring with others that were more experienced than ourselves. We even got some advice- "See that guy- he punches hard."

5 more to go and I'm looking forward to it. I now know to pace myself during the initial warm up and not to punch people in the back of the head.

I can't believe I won!

I got this great email today that I'm really excited about. Apparently, having an email address helped me win the lottery. You know, I hate spam and all, but when you actually win something from a spammer- its really really great! How do I know it's real? Just look at how much I won!

Subject Line: CONGRATULATION

Message:

Your e-mail address attached to ticket number 27511465896-6410 with serial number 3772-510 drew lucky numbers 7-14-88-23-31-45 which consequently won in the 1st category. You have therefore been approved for a lump sum pay of US$ 846,000.00 (Eight Hundred and fourty six United States Dollars)CONGRATULATIONS!!!

OK, so it looks like they forgot a couple words in the spelled-out version of the winnings and may have misspelled a word or two. Oh well, I'm going to hold them to the digits. I can't wait to collect. Wish me luck!

Holiday Picture Dump

The pictures below are from travels to North Carolina and Hawaii over the holidays. It was my second trip to Hawaii and this one was, what I called “Locals Immersion”.

Basically, we did some tourists stuff, but I wanted to get a feel for what it’s like as a local- the food, the language, the people, the secret spots. Since Sachiko grew up there (Oahu) and her parents are there, so it was a cinch. Unfortunately, the islands got over 15” of rain (“ua”) between December 27th and January 6th. So, I got a good feel for local TV and the local couch too.

North Carolina came first...

I wish I had pictures from hooking up with my old friend's from college (Danny, Nate, James, Tripp)- who gave me hard time about not mentioning Appalachain State University (where we all wentto college) on this site. So there you go guys...

I always have a good time with my family- we laugh together and take great pride in laughing it each other’s expense. Every year, Santa brings toy guns that shoot the little orange suction dart things. This year was especially good (the guns shot accurately). This is Casey putting the beat down on his little bro Josh.

Dad Gun.gif

My Dad, the sheriff of toy-gun-ville.

Fish farm.gif

So this is a fish farm- where my family’s business Blue Ridge Fish Hatchery, grows Koi. We have over 200 ponds like these.

Off to Hawaii now. We got enough of a break in the rain for us to take a hike near Sachiko’s house- the trail was Wiliwilinui Ridge Trail. Did you know the Hawaiian alphabet only has 12 letters? My favorite word (a town's name) Ka'a'awa. Yup- 4 a's. Then there's "Aiea" the only town in America with a name made of all vowels.

lookout.gif

This is a pretty touristy place- the Pali Lookout. But, damn it’s pretty up there.

New Years. Hawaii is one of the last places on earth for New Years- it starts in Australia's time zone and goes all the way around before hitting Hawaii.

celebrate.gif

Here is Sachiko's brother Mark doing the "Carlton Dance" a la Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. This is right at Midnight from Dukes on Waikiki. We were joined by some folks that went to high school with Sachiko at Punahou School in Honolulu.

wedding.gif

Congrats to Maila and Lyon who were wed on January 3rd- It was a Hawaiian Filipino Catholic ceremony- which was a new experience for me. Maila and Sachiko went to high school together and she and Lyon live in the Seattle area now. We had a great time with them and everyone there for the wedding.

North Shore.gif

We spent one night out at the North Shore at the Turtle Bay resort- our vacation within a vacation. I always love to get out to Waimea, Sunset, etc. to check out the waves and watch the surfers. The North Shore has got to be one of the coolest places on earth.

Horses.gif

While out there we did a little tour on horseback. That's me on Casper (the friendly horse) and Sachiko on Chili Pepper.

Feet.gif

And spent some time drinking tropical drinks on the beach- it was tough.

Brushing is a hard thing to break

So here's my New Years resolution- to stop moving my arm when I brush my teeth with an electric toothbrush.

I just got a new Braun electric toothbrush for Christmas and no matter how hard I try, I cannot stop shaking it around like a normal toothbrush.

I guess for some 25 years I've been doing it the same way and all the sudden this thing comes along and poof- I don't have to do the work anymore.

My arm hasn't figured it out yet. It knows I have a toothbrush in my mouth and it's going to brush with it, dammit.

The weather is here, we wish you were beautiful

The Hawaiian word for rain is "ua". So far on this trip, the ua hasn't stopped.

After a wet start to the winter in Seattle, we hoped a 10 day stay with the future in-laws in Oahu, Hawaii would be a nice winter break from the rain in Seattle. That is usually the case, but not this time.

So far, I think I have less of a tan than I did leaving Seattle. It has rained and rained and rained some more- everyday, all day. It's supposed to stop on Sunday, so we'll have a couple of days of sun- but so far it's been wet. Fun and very relaxing, but very wet with puddles of ua everywhere.
